Our Fall plant fertilization application aids in root development and the production of food storage used by the plant for spring flowering and growth. This application assists the plant in recovering from summer stress.
Ornamental plants in Florida are subject to attack from an extremely wide variety of insects and other related pests. Needless to say, it is virtually impossible for an individual to identify all these species. As far as control is concerned, identification of species is usually not particularly important. The type of damage the pest is inflicting to the plant (sucking the plant juices, chewing the foliage, etc.) is important in aiding identification of the pest and, in general, indicates which pesticide to apply for control.
Plant diseases are primarily caused by three types of organisms:
It is important that the homeowner and grower realize that control of plant diseases must be preventative. Once a plant gets a disease, we cannot cure it. Sometimes it may seem that a plant is cured (of a leaf spot, for example) but actually we have protected undiseased leaves and new leaves as they emerge. The diseased leaves drop, and the plant thus appears to have been “cured” of the disease. In the same way, cutting off diseased plant parts protects the remainder of the plant from progressive infection. Possibly in the future, some of the systemic fungicides will enable us to “cure” diseases.
Mulches are an extension of mechanical control and perhaps one of the most practical and reasonably effective methods utilized. Organic materials, such as pine bark, shredded cypress bark, wood chips, pine needles, leaves and lawn clippings, rocks and gravel are commonly used about 2-3 inches deep. Mulches not only aid in weed control but also assist in moderating fluctuations in soil temperatures, prevent soil erosion, conserve moisture and aid in root aeration.
